Tommy Bahama‘s headed to the desert, and adding a new retail concept to boot.
Tommy Bahama brings its laidback vibe to the the Tommy Bahama Miramonte Resort & Spa in California, which opened for business on Wednesday. Located in Indian Wells in the Greater Palm Springs area, the company’s first resort concept represents an elevated lifestyle focused on wellness that pairs island living with desert luxury.
Following a $20 million renovation, the new resort boasts 215 guestrooms and reimagined villa suites on 11 acres dotted with olive trees, fragrant citrus groves and flower gardens. The villa suites are outfitted with Tommy Bahama furniture, décor, wallpaper and bedding. The space also boasts 35,000 square feet of flexible meeting and event space, three saltwater swimming pools with cabanas. A new signature restaurant and bar pays homage to the citrus groves and is named after the Tommy Bahama cocktail Grapefruit Basil. Set against the Santa Rosa Mountains, the site also features the new Rosa Boutique retail shop and a 12,000-square-foot Spa Rosa.
“At Tommy Bahama, we’ve always believed in the art of living well and embracing the island lifestyle,” Doug Wood, Tommy Bahama’s CEO, said. “With this resort, we’re crafting an entirely new concept of leisure, fusing our brand’s essence with the unparalleled beauty of this desert oasis and creating a destination where every moment feels like a timeless escape.”
Wood said the idea for a resort has been in the works for the last 15 years. “We are the entire lifestyle package. We have the world’s best resort apparel, fantastic restaurants and bars, and amazing home furniture business. All wrapped up in a defined island point of view,” he told Sourcing Journal. “Why now? We finally landed on the perfect property… We also found the right partner that understands the power of the brand.”
The Miramonte Resort & Spa is co-owned by national real estate investment and development firm Lowe. “The marrying of Tommy Bahama’s skillful concepting with Lowe’s expertise in developing inspiring environments has created a truly special experience at the Tommy Bahama Miramonte Resort & Spa,” Lowe’s chairman and founder Robert J. Lowe said. “With our hospitality management subsidiary, CoralTree Hospitality, at the helm, our guests will receive the same world class service at this newly imagined resort.”
More resort and spa locations are on the agenda. “We are actively looking for locations in Florida, Arizona, and Hawaii,” Wood said, adding that the number and time frame depends on “what works for us. We don’t see an end to the Tommy Bahama journey.”
The Rosa Boutique sells Tommy Bahama merchandise that’s exclusive to the resort, and stocks luxury goods from local brands. The shop features exclusive resort apparel in Tommy Bahama’s signature print Calypso Palms.
Wood said the print is available in women’s dresses, as well as men’s camp shirts, swimwear and tote bags. “We also have Tobago knits, half zips, linen shirts and hats with the Tommy Bahama Miramonte Resort & Spa logo, as well as limited-edition scenic print men’s camp shirt,” he added.
All the clothing sold at the boutique all have a “wear now” attitude that matches the resort’s relaxed desert environment. The merchandise still embraces the coastal attitude for men and women that’s core to the Tommy Bahama brand. In addition to dressy linens and swim coverups to golf apparel and other selections, the boutique also sells sporting equipment, as well as footwear, towels and other resort essentials.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Tommy Bahama Group Inc. is owned by Oxford Industries Inc. There are over 160 company-owned and operated Tommy Bahama retail doors worldwide. Twenty-two of those locations feature either a Tommy Bahama Restaurant & Bar or a Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar.
