Shop Gap x Sushi Club
The era of loud-luxury logomania is, for the most part, over, meaning you don’t need flashy brand names or maximalist designs to signal your expensive tastes. Sometimes, all it takes is sitting down to some black cod with miso, A5 wagyu, and sea salt–sprinkled shishito peppers while wearing nothing more than a pitch-black fleece hoodie, minimalist trucker hat, and your favorite pair of sweats. We’re talking about Gap’s newest collaboration, of course, which centers none other than Chef Nobu Matsuhisa and his exclusive Sushi Club community — just one more piece of the Nobu empire that’s replete with hotels in locations from Los Cabos to Las Vegas and Marrakech to Marbella; close to 60 restaurants worldwide; multiple cookbooks; and, as of February 9, a merch collection.
Dining at Nobu and knowing what the chef’s miso cod really tastes like (hint: heavenly) has been considered an urban status symbol since the first restaurant, co-founded by Robert De Niro, debuted in New York’s Tribeca neighborhood circa 1994. It’s not such a surprise, then, that Gap decided to reimagine some of its most iconic staples by subjecting them to the Nobu treatment — seeing as how Zac Posen, since taking the label’s creative reigns in 2024, has been working hard to elevate its image from that of a nostalgia-inducing mall brand. Staying true to this modus operandi (as well as Posen’s efforts to cement Gap in the larger cultural conversations), Gap has also tapped the likes of Dôen, Sandy Liang, Malbon, and Cult Gaia for recent years’ collaborations.
Gap × Sushi Club Heavyweight Logo Hoodie
As Gap × Sushi Club’s heaviest layer, this hoodie will get you through the winter season — and beyond — in warmth, with a healthy portion of good looks. Its central pocket is good for hauling your Amex Gold card, soy sauce packets (never on the rice, always on the fish), and everything in between.
Price upon publish date of this article: $175
Something to know about Sushi Club: It’s the brainchild of Matsuhisa and designer Chris Stamp, merging hospitality, cuisine, and style through high-end streetwear. In the past, Sushi Club added cool-cat finishing touches to a Nike Air Force 1 sneaker; now, it’s taking over Gap’s e-shelves with a line of refined basics that will take you from the red-eye flight to the last-minute Opentable reservation in soft-spoken luxury.
What to expect when shopping Gap x Sushi Club? Delightful and unexpected design details like a never-before-seen Gap logo with chopsticks subbing in for that capital “A”; top-tier materials used throughout (think heavyweight cotton and breathable mesh panels); and a nod to San Francisco, which happens to be Gap’s city of origin.
Those on intimate terms with Gap are likely to remember Chef Nobu from one of its campaigns in the ’90s: specifically, the black-and-white “Individuals of Style” shoot lensed by renowned photographer Herb Ritts. Decades later, the man, now 76, is back — having established the kind of cultural dominance that makes us believe this launch will sell out all too quick for comfort. (The oversized denim jacket’s inventory has already been fully claimed, but more styles will drop soon on sushi-club.com.)
Grabbing all three in-stock selects will cost you less than the $420 Valentine’s Day omakase dinner at Nobu Downtown this year, which is to say it’s a small price to pay for a collection that brings together two powerhouses in their respective industries. As for the A-listers already on board with all things Gap x Sushi Club? The list includes standout names like Central Cee, Charlie Puth, Ciara, Shay Mitchell, and Saweetie, judging by the talent that helped ring in Gap’s latest with a seven-course dinner personally curated by Matsuhisa on February 7.
Whether you’re an MVG (Most Valuable Guest, obviously) at Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay or someone with a deep respect for Matsuhisa’s mastery of Nikkei cuisine (and accompanying, well-earned fame), one thing can be agreed upon: A Gap hoodie looks better with chopsticks on it.
