Brrrr — it’s cold outside. As temps continue to drop below freezing, you’re likely well into your winter outerwear rotation of wool coats and puffer jackets. But there’s nothing quite as soft, insulating, and particularly glamorous as a fluffy fur coat. If you’re looking for a cruelty-free solution to this season’s cozy and luxe street style trend, look no further than our roundup of the best faux fur coats to wear from winter to early spring.
Fur, whether synthetic, plant-based, or animal-derived, is constantly up for debate in fashion. Major design houses, including Chanel, Gucci, Valentino, and Stella McCartney, have weened off or halted production of real fur, while brands like Unreal Fur and Apparis offer affordable options that are just as good for the planet as they are for our fuzzy friends. While most faux fur is made from polyester, which gets an A-plus for insulation but a low grade in sustainability, new developments have been introduced to include plant-based fibers or recycled synthetics.

A fur coat is always in fashion, as its one of the oldest forms of outwear and looks timeless no matter how it’s styled. However, it’s especially on-trend right now, considering the rise of the new #mobwife aesthetic on TikTok, which has racked up over 160 million views in a few short weeks. The trend entails key elements of boss-level beauty, like nude lipstick and smokey eyes, with fashion pieces that evoke power, like gold jewelry, oversized sunglasses and opulent-looking faux fur coats. It’s a trickle-down trend we saw all over the runways; Stella McCartney showed fuzzy, animal-printed faux fur for pre-fall 2024, while Chloé and Jil Sander leaned into fluffed-up longline coats and fur vests in resort 2024 collections. We also saw a myriad of fur coats throughout Fashion Week street style, whether layered over silky slip dresses or relaxed straight-leg jeans.
Luxurious fur outwear is always a staple among prominent fashion forces, and this year we’re seeing a lot more playful variation in cold weather street style. Nicki Minaj and Kendall Jenner opted for vibrant furs this winter, with boots that make just as much as a statement, while Rihanna and Emily Ratajkowski contrasted the dressy style with ultra-casual and comfortable elements, such as an easy baseball cap or walking sneakers. Meanwhile, trendsetters from Selena Gomez, Kim Kardashian, and Hailey Bieber took monochromatic cues in all-black or white-out ensembles to match their cozy fur coats in longline hems.
However you style your fur, just make sure it’s faux (because there’s nothing more glamorous than embracing the ethical option). Below, see our favorite faux fur coats for 2024, along with information on the different types of faux fur coats to shop now.

The Different Types of Faux Fur Coats
Faux fur coats come in as many — if not more — styles as any other coat. They come in various necklines, from notched lapels to hooded collars, and the range hem lengths. Each style can appear fluffy, fringed, subdued and sleek, or especially tufted and textural, as seen in chevron quilts and ribbed fur. Just like genuine fur coats, faux fur coats are available in a range of colorways and animal print imitations, with options for mink, chinchilla, rabbit, and fox fur alternatives, along with cruelty-free zebra and leopard print, cowhide, and more.
Faux fur varies in feel, depending on the animal fur it is replicating. Generally, faux fur comes in three tufting lengths, such as long pile faux fur, medium pile faux fur, and short pile faux fur. The longer the pile, the fluffier and shaggier the faux fur, while short pile faux fur will feel denser to the touch and provide stiffer insulation. Of course, with faux fur, the fiber length may not authentically match up the with animal-inspired pattern, where, for example, you may find cowhide or leopard print in a long pile faux fur.
- Faux fur midi coats: A midi silhouette is among the most versatile you can purchase in a faux fur finish, as it can top casual to dressy ensembles with optimal mobility at the leg. It offers extra coverage from harsh winds through the torso and top of the thighs, while allowing visual space for styling with knee-high socks, tall boots, or statement pants and skirts.
- Faux fur long coats: Long faux fur coats that drape down to your ankles and skim the floor will be the warmest option for cold winter days. These feel just like a fuzzy blanket, which not only feels soft and cozy, but also effectively traps heat to the hold body as it blocks a frigid breeze.
- Cropped faux fur coats: If you’re not ready to take the plunge into a full-bodied faux fur coat, consider a cropped style, like a shrug, bolero, or shawl. These function as both outerwear and an accessory piece, whether they’re worn outside for extra warmth or indoors as an outfit topper. Consider shopping this style in a neutral colorway so it can apply to the range of ensembles, from a t-shirt and jeans uniform, to corset tops and slinky slip dresses.
