Originally started as a reworked denim brand, which gained a cult following for its off-duty model aesthetic (and worn by the likes of Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski), Alexia Elkaim has managed to evolve Miaou into a full-fledged fashion brand in just a short matter of time. For spring, Elkaim introduced softer fabrics which she felt elevated the collection — chiffon and silk — and repurposed them in the way she would with her denim, giving them color-blocked treatments or dip-dying them for designs that appealed day to night.
Elkaim also expanded and officially brought her sub-line Miaou Sport into the collection. “It was a test last season and I think this season I was like let’s just go for it. It’s my personal style, so I think there’s a lot of mesh, a lot of gathering, colorblocking so it feels very personal to my style. It’s punchy and funky.” There were great drawstring-tie sporty dresses, skirts and biker shorts that meshed well with her softer lineup. No matter the fabric, each piece directly reflected Elkaim’s inspiration of “all of the things I cringed about in the early Aughts.” To wit: low rise, cropped and flared jeans with a Miaou shopping receipt print, cowl neck slipdresses or neon tank paired with polka-dotted skirt and tie-dyed babydoll dress or ruched tops with her updated, ultra-flattering jeans.
