African references ran through Yigal Azrouël’s spring collection. In particular, the designer was inspired by a series of Irving Penn images portraying traditional costumes and painted tribal symbols. The latter were embroidered on a range of pieces, including a military green eyelet shirt, a pale-pink blazer and a graphic halter-neck dress, all embellished with shell appliqués.
A forest scenario was hand-embroidered on a short dress trimmed with a colorful geometric motif, while a trench was worked in leaf pattern. Its back featured a plissé detail, which returned as a detachable belt on a sartorial black jacket. These added modern, urban edge to Azrouël’s lively take on an ethnic theme.
