Ballet has been a recurrent theme in spring collections and Jill Stuart joined troupe, taking her girl from rehearsal to stage. The designer said before her show that she imagined her “dancing in the dark.”
Working with floaty chiffons, Stuart created ample movement as her models strutted down the runway. She also showed plenty of pretty floral slipdresses, at times layered over leggings, as well as a multicolor pleated skirt paired with a ballet wrap sweater and an airy pleated and layered chiffon dress.
Also of note were color-blocked jersey dresses that skimmed the body and lingerie-influenced looks, such as the cropped pants with side lacing and the striped bustier worn over a crisp top. All worked for the designer’s contemporary customer — until Stuart went all Studio 54 with a few gold lamé pieces that seemed jarringly out of place.
