Daniele Carlotta is having a big year. Beyoncé wore one of his dresses in her “Formation” video and he struck a production partnership with Kabi, which took effect for his spring collection. He sought to ride that momentum by focusing on merchandising his line. “My buyers told me that they need the pants, the skirts, the cotton, the evening dresses,” he said, though that didn’t stop him from casting a major mood over his spring presentation, a morning-after scene of models brooding on couches in a pink-lit room inspired by early Eighties Cap d’Agde. The girls certainly looked beautiful but spent, lounging in what looked like lurex gowns and fluttery dresses. The pants, skirts and cotton pieces Carlotta mentioned may very well have been in the mix, though it was difficult to see through all the mood lighting. He successfully channeled the collection’s attitude, but it’s important for an emerging designer to make his merch clear, too.
