This season, Hanako Maeda looked back at her Japanese roots for inspiration. “It’s a rediscovery of my heritage. I wanted to use traditional Japanese elements in a more modern way,” she said backstage, pointing to an interesting button-down dress that had a sash inserted in the bustline and was layered over an off-the-shoulder knit.
The designer also used shibori prints mixed with modern prints in pleated dresses and as a segment in a great green chiffon asymmetrical slipdress. Interesting, too, was a denim and printed chiffon skirt. “Denim is traditionally Japanese, but when people think of it they think of other references,” Maeda noted. Her well-executed collection creatively married East and West sensibilities.
