For a brand steeped in a retro-cutesy aesthetic that comes in and out of fashion, the question becomes how to incorporate a modern look while retaining the core customer appeal. Kate Spade creative director Deborah Lloyd deftly managed this balancing act for spring. She put a fresh spin on classic patterns, such as a deconstructed floral on a bold black and cream stripe. A signature Spade design, a cream bow blouse with a black structured full skirt, was shown with a baseball cap and shower sandals; the look tapped into the new ath-leisure trend as did Neoprene accents on a bag and dress. The brand’s signature whimsy was most evident in the bags, including a green leather watering can and a wicker snail clutch.
