A boss, a pirate, a Victorian heroine or just a sophisticated modern lady: A woman should be free to be what she wants. That’s the apparent message Vivienne Westwood delivered with her eccentric spring runway show. She opened with a series of power suits with exaggerated details, such as broad shoulders and oversize padded lapels. These had a strong masculine feel that contrasted with the retro, feminine look of bodices paired with high-waisted short pants and ruffled cotton sundresses trimmed with lace. More contemporary silhouettes included pretty silk draped dresses in solid colors and a chic frock worked in a precious floral silk taffeta. All the looks, from polished to bizarre — including a few that, seemingly apropos of nothing, were paired with buccaneer-inspired hats — were infused with Westwood’s trademark strong point of view.
