As close as Maria Cornejo stays each season to the mood for which her Zero + Maria Cornejo collections are known, she also manages to do just enough to make it all look fresh: new fabrics, colors and prints as well as subtle tweaks to details and lengths. For resort, Cornejo used stone canvas for superlong pants, culottes and a sleek trenchcoat. She was partial to green — from jade to moss — and showed a terrific sheath with an obi-style front, as well as easy fluid dresses, wool cardigans, plenty of pants and relaxed tunics.
When Cornejo creates a silhouette she likes, she repeats it in most of her favorite fabrics. Her signature looks — those carefully cut dresses — are, as she notes, “forgiving with plenty of attitude.” The same can be said of her sportswear pieces, including leather drawstring shorts shown with a slightly bloused top, a jumpsuit in silk crepe or her new bronze metallic jacquard, patterned after Paris iron work. “This is not beachy,” said Cornejo of her resort offering. “We are not on the beach in November.” Still, she did offer a capsule swimsuit and cover-up collection for those who might travel to warmer climes.
