“Active has taken over the universe,” said Norma Kamali, stripping down to show how she layered a workout tank under the stretch Lycra “suit” jacket and second-skin tights she will wear out that night. As innovative and fun as her collection is, she is most passionate about merchandising, mixing, creating a wardrobe and developing fabrics with a purpose. A prime example is the bonded compression panels she puts in exercise clothes “so you don’t look like a sausage — and to support the back,” she said.
Almost everything — including jeans, a swimsuit and a trenchcoat — are reversible and washable, as ease is her mantra. Kamali offered a large stretch denim group with raw edges on all the looks. Her historic sweatshirt niche remained as cozy and charming as ever — newest are a safari jacket and off-the shoulder romper in classic gray. For all the attention to fabric technology and performance, it was still the Kamali style that sizzled.
