Op Art painter Bridget Riley’s work influenced some of Gilles Mendel’s “curvilinear” prints for his J.Mendel resort collection. Done with touches of Lurex, they appeared in flowing, hand-pleated gowns and dresses — to sultry effect. Elsewhere the designer showed more restraint via graphic outlines of pockets on pants and versatile wool and shearling outerwear with geometric paneling – one coat, specifically, could be converted into a jacket by zipping off the bottom half.
“This collection is a celebration of the code of the house,” Mendel explained. But what is a J.Mendel collection without a standout fur? This time, a streamlined pink mink coat did the honors.
