A quirky vintage sensibility has always been at the heart of Creatures of the Wind. Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters find obscure historical references irresistible, and have gotten caught up in a throwback obsession in the past. But they’ve been on point lately, measuring their geeky, Old World tendencies into charming, considered touches as they did for a lovely pre-fall lineup.
The vibe was midcentury design elements with a Japanese influence rendered gently on a velvet coat with lapels that wrapped into a belt, a mink fur scarf pieced into a daisy pattern, black dress with a crisp gingham top, grosgrain ribbon details and repurposed army jackets hand-embroidered with daisies, pot leaves and images from Renaissance paintings. “We were kind of looking at symbols of purity and developed the embroideries from Ikebana manuals from the turn of the last century,” Peters said. Fabrics felt elevated and interesting and the details — the embroideries, as well as jeweled or floral buttons — emboldened relatively classic silhouettes with rich, thoughtful touches.
