A picture of a circus-inspired outfit and a cat from Karl Lagerfeld’s 1971 collection for Chloé, as well as Federico Fellini’s “I Clowns” film, inspired Massimo Giorgetti’s eclectic pre-fall collection. References t0 clown costumes, such as oversize ruffles and images of cats, punctuated the whole lineup, but it wasn’t a joke. Giorgetti maintained MSGM’s youthful sense of fun while working toward something a bit more mature.
Ruffles in contrasting colors added a playful touch to clean sartorial coats, colorful knits and cool culottes, while cat motifs appeared on an intarsia sweater and embroideries on the back of an outerwear piece. Silhouettes and embellishments, including the metallic bottle taps decorating tweed jackets, evoked an underground grunge vibe, which made for an interesting counterpoint to the more bourgeois, Forties-inspired feminine draped dresses and patchwork floral skirts.
