Continuing on her Spanish journey, Nicole Hanley headed to Madrid for fall (after visiting Seville last season). El Museo Nacional del Prado, home to classic paintings by Velázquez and Goya, served as the main inspiration — and gave the collection its past-century references.
For starters, the designer translated traditional Spanish mantillas into lace details on dresses and lace scarves over Victorian-esque blouses. She also worked with velvet, with a black tank maxidress with a ruched bodice and a waist-tie jacket the standouts — not necessarily because they were the best looks, but because they seemed the least calculated. While Hanley isn’t trying to make effortless-looking clothes, perhaps she could freshen things up just a bit.
