Rachel Antonoff transformed the gymnasium of Manhattan’s Professional Children’s School into a college science fair, and her fall collection, based around three characters, had a rather elaborate backstory. “It’s a love triangle,” the designer explained. “There’s Fern, the student who’s having an affair with her biology teacher, Seymour, who is in love with the botany teacher, Angelica, who is in love with Fern.”
But what did it all mean for the clothes? In Antonoff’s words: “It’s school girl-inspired, but it’s a little messy,” she said. “She was up late, and she rolled out of bed because she was sleeping with her teacher.”
The lineup — which was perfectly cute — included men’s tuxedo and pajama shirting, plaid pleated skirts, powder-blue denim overalls and collegiate sweaters emblazoned with words like “Phys Ed.” She took the biology theme most literally in her “garden-printed” dresses, which at first glance looked floral but upon closer inspection included an assemblage of bodily organs.
