Citing the “glamour of the Seventies” as his inspiration for fall, Dennis Basso went to town — and the result was a study in over-the-top opulence. A few flamboyant furs with fringe and alligator-pattern leather could be fabulous on the right girl, worn over jeans and a T-shirt for a night of clubbing. But she’s not Basso’s target. His muses are flashy uptown ladies out for a grand evening, and his elaborate furs are meant to be layered over diaphanous dresses and metallic gowns. In Basso’s eyes, more is more.
During a few refreshing moments of restraint, that premise went by the wayside: A platinum fox and gray cashmere coat over an ivory cashmere tunic and gray pants as well as a fringed sable and mink evening coat over a gray bias-cut slip gown were both reminders that sometimes, less is chic.
