A bundle of rich wool fabric awaited each front-row guest at Paula Gerbase’s 1205 fall show, telegraphing that quality is definitely at the core of the designer’s tailored, minimal fashions. Despite the show’s lofty title, “The Eloquence of Ornament,” Gerbase kept her looks as pure and pristine as always, just evoking here and there the sacred presence of a priest’s ceremonial attire or the hieratic gesture of a toga dress. Her long, white, starched Swiss cotton voile dress was layered with a contrasting liturgical stole and her anthracite baby alpaca dress was cut with extra fabric draping from one shoulder, held in place by a thin metallic circle. The few metal rings piercing the fabric were the main decorative element in the studied simplicity of this collection.
