‘Yellowstone’ Costumes: Tracking the Western Style Aesthetic Over Five Seasons [PHOTOS]

Since its premiere in 2018, “Yellowstone” incurred a profound impact on American culture. While the series’ popularity by way of star Kevin Costner and its middle-America narrative was enough to intrigue viewers, the series’ costumes bled into the cultivation of a current aesthetic trend.

Western styles and cowgirl core gained renewed interest over the course of the last few years. Although “Yellowstone” isn’t solely to blame — Beyonce’s eighth studio album “Cowboy Carter” tapped into the zeitgeist for months in 2024 — the series introduced a new wave of fashion collaborations and style inspirations.

Co-created by John Linson and Taylor Sheridan, “Yellowstone” enlisted the talents of Johnetta Boone, Brit Ellerman and history-making two-time Oscar winner Ruth E. Carter to design the costumes for the series. Boone costumed more than 25 of the series’ episodes.

In October 2024, Boone collaborated with Ariat on a limited-edition collection inspired by the series. “As a heritage Western brand that’s known and trusted by the Western community, Ariat was the perfect partner for this project,” Boone said. “My vision was to create something that was firmly rooted in authentic Western culture, while at the same time inviting those from the outside to embrace the places and stories they’ve become so immersed in while watching.”

Free People also launched a collaboration with “Yellowstone” in November, while series star Cole Hauser fronted Lucky Brand’s Americana-inspired menswear campaign.

“Yellowstone” made an impact beyond the series’ popularity. Western style and aesthetics aren’t just a fad, they’re a part of the American fashion lexicon.
