Margot Robbie took it back to 1998 with her Mugler couture look at the red carpet premiere of her new film “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” on Monday in New York City.
For the premiere, the Oscar-nominated actress and producer wore a black and white look, featuring a striking white corset with a sinuous silhouette. The corset acted as a base for the black fabric of the dress.
Laying in an almost illusion deconstruction, the black fabric featured cutouts to reveal the white corset beneath the bustline in a plunging V shape and at the sides, along with waist-high slits on either side of the front of the skirt.

Forgoing statement pieces, Robbie opted to keep her jewelry minimal, adding a ring, bracelet and stud earrings. The “Barbie” actress and producer’s glam featured lined eyes and her hair was tossed up into a curly chignon with strands of curls to frame her face.
Robbie’s look was curated by stylist Andrew Mukamal, who also works with “Emily in Paris” star Lily Collins, among others. The look came from Mugler’s spring 1998 haute couture collection, which featured a bevy of variations on the black and white color blocking motif. The collection also incorporated corseted designs, emphasizing shape and sinuous lines in contrast to the few shift pieces that also featured.
The 1998 couture collection is a popular reference point for several high-profile figures. At the 2024 Academy Museum Gala, Kim Kardashian turned to the French label’s ’90s collection for her white corset and coordinated hooded coat.
Robbie’s latest look in ’90s Mugler certainly calls to mind the rise in early aughts and Y2K fashion. Although the dress didn’t showcase the ’90s and early 2000s trends that saw a resurgence over the last few years — think low-rise jeans and ballet flats, among others — the haute couture look indeed called back to the high-fashion trends of the latter ’90s and early 2000s.
“A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” follows two strangers through an imaginative tale that ultimately connects them. The film is directed by Kogonada and costars Colin Farrell. “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” hits theaters Friday.
