Amid the boom of bombshell hair comes Kristen Stewart and her messy bangs.
The 35-year-old actress stepped out for the “Sentimental Value” premiere after party on Wednesday night in Los Angeles, with disorderly, inky black fringe cut roughly above her eyebrows. The style and length, though no different than what she’s donned recently, was representative of a larger hair trend at work: the ratty micro bang.
With her hair tied in a bun in the back of her head, Stewart’s choppy bangs took center stage next to Elle Fanning’s and Renate Reinsve’s pristine slick-backs; the ends falling unevenly on her forehead, with longer strands tickling her ears. Stewart could have tamed her own fringe for Wednesday night’s gathering or she could’ve tapped her longtime stylist Adir Abergel to help. WWD has reached out to Abergel for clarification.

Though the “Twilight” star has never been one to follow trends, always moving to the beat of her own beauty ideals, her current hair approach is, ironically, now in vogue. Seen on the likes of Pamela Anderson, Ariana Grande, and most recently, Vera Wang, the micro bang was first popularized in the 1950s by film ingenues like Audrey Hepburn. The ratty micro bang is the modern-day iteration, a look in opposition to Old Hollywood beauty standards. It’s choppy, tangled and uneven, as if one had taken a pair of scissors to their hair on a whim.
Burgeoning interest in 1990s grunge beauty has, in part, inspired the rise of this style, as well as the antithesis of the “clean girl” aesthetic, namely the “tired girl.” The “tired girl” represents the imperfect, overworked, everyday woman who doesn’t have time for a 15-step skin care routine every morning. “It’s darker and edgier,” makeup artist Alexa Persico told WWD of the “tired girl.” “It’s all about energy, and right now on social media, people are connecting with these looks that feel more real, not filtered or overdone.”
Persico continued: “It flips the script on what we’ve been told is ‘pretty,’” Persico added. “For so long, it’s been all about brightness, flawlessness, faking awake. This look embraces the dark circles, the smudged liner, the sleepy vibe, and that’s what makes it beautiful in its own way. It’s makeup that matches your mood, not just your outfit.”
