Julianne Hough prepared for hosting the finale of “Dancing With the Stars” on Dec. 5 with a face mask — hydrating her skin ahead of a glam session from her makeup artist Kate Synnott. “Even though it’s TV, we still keep her skin super-natural because she’s got great skin,” said Synnott. “This whole ‘more makeup for TV’…that’s just not a thing anymore. You don’t need to put so much on.”
Meanwhile, hairstylist Riawna Capri, whom she has worked with for nearly 15 years, began going over the look for the night. They’re collaborating on the spot, with Hough describing “a more structured version than what we did for the Golden Globes” — recalling the event from over 10 years ago when her hair was pulled back away from her face with twists around the back. “Like a helix,” Hough added. “Sculpture-like, like a figure eight.” Music plays in the background while the trio gabs on guys, business and what’s on their social media feeds.
Hough has been embracing her style evolution for the past two years with the help of stylist Jen Mazur. The result: elevated glamor. Looking around her dressing room, inspiration is everywhere, including “The World According to Coco,” a coffee table book about Chanel’s founder. Photos of Marilyn Monroe and Brigitte Bardot are on the walls.
Her look for the show’s finale, a sculptural Versace dress that had a sheer bodice and flared skirt, was hanging from her door above a pair of towering Jimmy Choo heels. “This still feels very big and grand, but understated at the same time,” Hough told WWD, calling it “iconic” after later Lady Gaga wore the dress at the Oscars in March, and Gigi Hadid debuted the look on the runway for fall 2023.
After actress Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy triumphed as winners of the show’s 32nd season, Hough already came prepared for the after-party — the same outfit she wore for her studio arrival, proving her fashion savvy has become intuitive. “I was just like, ‘let me do something that’s translatable from night to day,'” she explained. “It’s a Proenza [Schouler] dress with some Khaite boots and my YSL bag. So, that’s cute. It’s chic.”
