Fashion week is brimming with runway and showroom presentations and trade fairs. Here is a guide to shows and events.
Premium
Now in its 19th edition, Berlin’s most long-standing contemporary fashion platform continues to polish and upgrade its premium mix. Conceived and curated as a “living retail concept,” Premium’s 1,200 collections span all segments of contemporary and progressive men’s and women’s wear, including sportswear, daywear, denim, accessories, and selected luxury and designer brands. Among the new exhibitors to be found in the Station’s almost 250,000 square feet of space are Duffy, Aigner, Love Moschino, Harris Wharf, Barbour, Iris von Arnim and Rena by Rena Lange, while last season’s Project Tokyo Goes Berlin (in support of young Japanese designers) will enter its second round in the first-floor Premium showrooms. The show organization’s neighboring F95 fashion store will also be site of special brand presentations during the fair.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin
It’s the 10th time up for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin, which has developed into the nation’s showplace for runway shows and, as of last season, fashion presentations in the new MBFWB Studio space in IMG’s elegant new tent at the Brandenburg Gate.
There will again be about 50 shows and presentations on the official MBFWB schedule, kicking off with Escada Sport, which has opted to show in the tent rather than off-site for the first time. There’s a lot of young Berlin talent on tap, as well as more established German designer brands including Hugo by Hugo Boss, Rena Lange and Schumacher, plus guest appearances by fashion makers from India and Romania.

Bread & Butter
Berlin’s big draw and filled to capacity with about 600 exhibitors, Bread & Butter has nonetheless eked out a bit of extra space this season for its new D.O.C.K. and Treasury areas as well as an extension to L.O.C.K. For as B&B chief Karl-Heinz Müller noted, the whole sport & street and urban fashion sector has grown up over these last 10 years, and January’s High Fidelity edition will reflect this new sophistication. In a container village housing exhibitors like Sebago and Strivers Row, D.O.C.K, or the Department of Contemporary Keynotes, is the post-streetwear counterpart to Labels of Common Kin (L.O.C.K.), whose signature heritage brands will now have the former airport fire station (now Fire Dept.) at their disposal. Treasury, in the former gates, will spotlight fashion accessories and also offer a Kusmi Tea Lounge.

Seek
Focusing on contemporary labels with a creative edge, Seek started in 2007 as a side program to Premium and has by now gained enough ground to be a separate fair. For January, the show is also gaining actual territory by taking over a 10,763-square-foot space in the nearby Kühlhaus location. Besides its existing brands, Seek is welcoming a few new additions there, including British knitwear label John Smedley and Munich-based designer Patrick Mohr, who previously showed at Premium.

Capsule
After a strong summer debut, Capsule is back and bigger by 60 percent, showing 75 men’s and women’s contemporary brands, and expanding more than 8,000 square feet, adding the second floor of the Alte Münze (Old Mint) and space across its courtyard. Brands include Minimarket, Topman and Wood Wood. Local fair Collect Showroom will also present a show-in-show, with Berlin brands including A.D. Deertz, Esther Perbandt, Franzius, Hien Le, Isabell de Hillerin, Reality Studio, Julian Zigerli, Mia Mai, Raphael Hauber, Sissi Goetze and Lunettes Kollektion. Show & Order
Another new addition to Berlin’s trade show scene, Show & Order has also set its sights on the more upscale fashion market. About 150 international collections, including Missoni, MW by Matthew Williamson, Aida Barni and Antik Batik, are slated for the premiere. The massive and raw industrial premises, however, are sure to be a strong contrast to the collections’ finesse. The former power station, the ground floor of which houses the legendary Berlin club Tresor, has a ruinous grandeur. As a trade-fair setting, Show & Order’s organizers suggest it’s a “warm spot in a cool city.”

The Gallery
A fixture on the trade show calendar for decades, CPD is being reborn as The Gallery in January. But instead of being Düsseldorf-focused like the previous format, The Gallery is showing both at home and in Berlin — starting with the latter. In its inaugural season, The Gallery completely booked all available space at the iconic Café Moskau. The lineup includes 80 exhibitors from the avant-garde and designer markets like Annette Görtz and shoe label Trippen.

Bright
Prior to taking the Berlin trade show plunge in July 2010, Bright catered to the street- and skatewear crowd in Frankfurt. With the change in cities, the show is closer to its European customers, who are in town for the set of coinciding fairs. And with plenty of space in the historical Stasi Headquarters location, Bright is also able to continuously work on its brand portfolio. January sees the launch of the show’s dedicated All Tomorrows space, spotlighting new labels and established brands with a close eye on the future.

In Fashion Berlin is going greener. Around a hundred collections (fashion and accessories) will be on view at the riverside Radialsystem V; about 20 percent of them are sustainable. Brands include Julia Starp, Neosens, Mia Mai and Exeter. Adding to the eco theme, this year the usually solo Lavera Showfloor joins in, presenting 14 fashion shows over three evenings at next door’s Energieforum. The pairing will continue this summer at In Fashion Munich.

Exberliner magazine has teamed up with trendy neighborhood second-handers the Nowkoelln Flowmarkt to host around 40 high-quality vintage fashion vendors in retro locale C-Club, a former Fifties era cinema for the U.S. Air Force, that happens to be right across the street from Bread & Butter’s Tempelhof home. On tap for Toast & Jam’s debut are a fashion floor show and a closing party with DJ’s, bands and performers.
