Tokyo’s Harajuku district is known for its eclectic street style and as the staging ground for streetwear legends including Nigo, Hiroshi Fujiwara and Jun Takahashi. To pay tribute to this legacy, Nike has cooked up a special edition of the Air Max 95.
The Nike Air Max 95 “Harajuku” has been revealed through a teaser image posted by Atmos creative director Hirofumi Kojima. Very little of the sneaker can actually be seen, but it does show a “HRJK” patch with a neon green Swoosh on the shoe’s lining. A box repeating the color can also be seen out of focus in the background, serving enough evidence to believe the sneaker will be based on the Air Max 95’s “Neon” colorway.

Because of Harajuku’s significance in streetwear, the buzz surrounding the Air Max 95th during its 30th anniversary and the pedestal that the “Neon” colorway sits on, this “Harajuku” edition of the sneaker should bring quite a lot of fanfare. And because of the very nature of the story behind it, there’s a nontrivial chance it ends up being exclusive to Japan, which will only add to the allure.
In 1933, the trio of Fujiwara, Takahashi and Nigo opened the boutique Nowhere in Ura-Harajuku, which translates to “Back of Harajuku.” Among its offerings was Takahashi’s brand Undercover, and when Nigo’s imported American clothing didn’t sell, he decided to create Bape. Their social circle included Shinsuke Takizawa, who founded Neighborhood in 1994, and the district became just as much of a hotbed for sneaker boutiques such as Atmos.
No release information has been revealed for the Nike Air Max 95 “Harajuku,” but more details should be on the way soon, which will be updated here.
