Nike, Inc.’s continued revitalization of its 2000s Air Jordan “Rare Air” series is continuing this spring with the launch of a brand new look for Michael Jordan’s third signature sneaker.
First seen in early images last fall, the Air Jordan 3 Retro “Rare Air” is now almost ready to be released. The style follows “Rare Air” Air Jordan 1 High OG styles for both men and women, which arrived at retail on Saturday. According to the product description for the Air Jordan 1s, the latest “Rare Air” concept is inspired by imperfect samples, incorrect logo placements and mismatched packaging. Based on the official images of the upcoming Air Jordan 3 Retro, a similar approach was taken on the classic model.
The “Rare Air” Air Jordan 3 Retro features a “Black/Chile Red/Neutral Grey/Military Blue/Coconut Milk” colorway which is somewhat reminiscent of the original “Black/Cement” style, but with key differences. The model’s signature elephant print overlays have been replaced with gray suedes — light gray at the heel, with a charcoal shade at the toe — and the addition of Military Blue breaks up the otherwise Chicago Bulls-friendly colors.

The right heel tab may feature the shoe’s most distinct update: a reversed Nike Air logo which gives the branding a mirror image effect. The pair’s “Rare Air” status is referenced on the insole branding, while alternate white shoelaces feature a stained look. Like the Air Jordan 1, the “Rare Air” Air Jordan 3 Retro comes in a unique shoebox which combines different eras of Jordan packaging.
In addition to the “Rare Air” Air Jordan 3 Retro, the concept is also set to appear on an upcoming Air Jordan 4.
As of publishing, the Air Jordan 3 Retro “Rare Air” is expected to be released on May 30 for a retail price of $200. The sneaker’s SKU is IB8967-004 and it will be available from SNKRS and select Jordan Brand stockists.
