Michael Jordan’s Air Jordan 1 ‘Shattered Backboard’ to Get Packaging Leaning Into Its Lore: ‘The Backboard Exploded’

The release comes 10 years after the debut of the original.

The forthcoming return of the Air Jordan 1 “Shattered Backboard” has been known for quite some time, but as the summer release date draws near, special packaging for the occasion has been confirmed.

A shattered glass effect has been added to the black and orange Air Jordan 1 box, taking a more literal approach to the story behind the beloved sneaker colorway. Images of the special box have been revealed by the sneaker reseller Prospect Atlanta.

In 1985, Michael Jordan shattered a backboard during a dunk in a summer exhibition game against the Italian team Stefanel Trieste. The colors of the Air Jordan 1 “Shattered Backboard,” which debuted in 2015, mirror that of the uniform Jordan wore during his famous altercation with the basketball hoop.

“Glass was everywhere,” Jordan brand senior vice president Howard White said of the dunk in a 2016 press release. “The backboard exploded. I’m looking at his eyes, his ears…looking for little bits of glass. In the moment, it was wild. It was a little scary, because we didn’t know where the glass was going. They were playing and then there was that moment. I don’t know of any moment where one can detect something otherworldly has happened, but that one has become something grand. For MJ, though, it was just a moment in the game.”

A satin version of the “Shattered Backboard” Air Jordan 1 released in 2018, followed by a “3.0” edition in 2019 featuring a crinkled patent leather upper. The original makeup hasn’t released again in the 10 years since its debut, and its return this year comes with the addition of an insole graphic depicting a rim and showering glass.

The Air Jordan 1 “Shattered Backboard” will release Aug. 23, five weeks later than initially reported, through the Snkrs app and select third party retailers. Pricing is set at $180.
