From the ’60s to the present, the Gazelles, which debuted in the 1960s, feature a gum rubber sole. This silhouette is made from green suede, while the signature three stripes stand out on the sides in a rich red color. The sneakers feature a round toe, with front lace-up fastening with laces in a darker forest green shade, and a logo-debossed tongue. The Gazelles have become a go-to sneaker for many, especially since the recent surge in popularity of the Adidas Sambas, which share a similar design.

According to Debretts, who has chronicled and published books on traditional British etiquette, the tone of the monarchy has become more modern and aims to be accepting and open, but some guidelines must still be followed. While the company states that a black-tie dress code may require women to wear long dresses and men to wear tuxedos, there is no mention of footwear.

“Those invited to royal events usually want to do their best to be correct. Specific dress codes, such as black tie, should be adhered to. It is generally best to err on the more conservative side when interpreting dress codes,” the Debretts website says about dress codes for royal events. “The key thing is to ask for extra guidance, which is given readily by the relevant office.”
