Columbia Sportswear is mining its roots for its latest capsule.
On Jan. 16, the Portland, Ore.-based company will introduce CSC1938, a line inspired by its archives and reimagined for today’s streetwear customer.
The first drop of the limited-edition collection of men’s and women’s pieces is based on the brand’s classic hunting and utility styles of the 1970s and ’80s. It includes around eight pieces, and the hero product is the Dually Mountain Outerchange jacket, an updated version of the brand’s popular Interchange jacket. The jacket, available in British Tan Duck Camo or black, is made from premium down and has an Omni Heat Infinity lining, but, according to Becca Johnson, director of special projects for Columbia, rather than having a zip-in vest on the interior of the garment, the Outerchange features a vest that zips on the outside, like a fishing vest.
The jacket will retail for $425, higher priced than the core Columbia collection but in line with some of the company’s special project offerings such as its Star Wars collaboration, in which the General Han Solo Trench sells for $600.

Other pieces include a cotton-blend hoodie with a graphic print for $100, a short-sleeve T-shirt for $65, a camo-print long-sleeve T-shirt for $75, a panel hat for $40 and a beanie for $45.
Johnson, who has been with Columbia for 20 years, said she and her team are constantly looking at the archives and catalogues when seeking inspiration for collections, particularly as the company has collaborated with other brands over the past decade. But rather than teaming with another company, Columbia felt it was the right time to create a lifestyle collection with limited distribution that was all its own.
“We want to showcase our archival pieces in a modern way,” she said, adding that CSC1938 will be very limited in its production and distribution. Although it will be sold on the Columbia website on its special Drop page, which features elevated products and editorial images, CSC1938 will also be available at a number of specialty retailers that are new customers of the brand, Johnson said. They include Feature, a trendy West Coast-based upscale streetwear chain; Lapstone & Hammer; Hatchet Outdoor Supply Co; Solefly; West, and other stores that Johnson said have been “interested in our lifestyle product, but found them to be too widely distributed.”
Johnson said because of the limited availability of the line, “we expect it to sell through” once it launches at 7 a.m. Pacific time on Jan. 16. The company will begin teasing the collection online Tuesday.
The first drop of CSC1938, which references the date Columbia Sportswear was founded, is being called Vol. 1.0, and Johnson said the plan is to introduce one to two additional drops over the course of the year. “My goal is to keep having pieces of our history out there,” she said.
