As far as fashion muses go, rocker Nick Cave, who sings of death and the macabre, is certainly not the norm. Bela’s Dead, however, isn’t your typical frothy intimates line, flaunting as it does designer Jo Lynch’s fascination with the dark side. To wit, while Lynch cites Cave as a major inspiration, her firm’s moniker hails from another Goth source, the Seventies song “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” by the band Bauhaus.
The collection beautifully toes the line between the morbid and alluringly bewitching, as in pieces featuring surrealistic
graphics. And for this, London-based Lynch has her collaboration with Finnish artist Klaus Haapaniemi to thank. “His illustrations are extraordinary, full of horror and beauty,” she says.
