NEW YORK — Inevitably most holiday shoppers wind up making a few unexpected purchases for themselves.
So WWD asked a handful of attendees at Friday’s 20th annual Citymeals-on-Wheels power lunch for women what they might pick up fashion-wise. A few said they hadn’t given much thought to what might spruce up their wardrobes.
Apparently filming “The Devil Wears Prada” didn’t make Meryl Streep a clotheshorse. “I’m just mostly interested in food stuff over the holidays,” she said.
Streep is, after all, on to other things work-wise. Last week it was revealed she will appear as an investigative reporter opposite Robert Redford and Tom Cruise in the United Artists’ film “Lions for Lambs.” Production for what will be Cruise’s first post-Paramount picture will begin in January.
The event’s emcee, Paula Zahn, was initially hard-pressed to come up with a holiday gift for herself. “I can’t even remember the last thing I bought for myself. At this time of year, I’m so busy catching up on birthday, bar mitzvah and wedding gifts — never mind Hanukkah and holiday gifts.”
That said, there is something CNN’s host of “The Situation Room” said she “desperately needs” — a new pair of running shorts. “Maybe that will be my big indulgence,” she laughed.
“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” actress Stephanie March knows just what she will be looking for. “I always buy one holiday cocktail dress that is sexy enough to be fun for my husband [Bobby Flay] and is appropriate enough to wear to my family’s holiday party,” she said.
Dressed in a striped Diane von Furstenberg dress and red patent leather heels, March said she has her eye on a Dolce & Gabbana green and white-lace dress — not exactly the type of garb she will get to wear when she appears in Eric Bogosian’s show, “Talk Radio,” in February.
Kathleen Turner also said she has an annual indulgence. “Maybe a trip to Italy?” she mused. “I tell you what I do give myself is at least one beautiful Armani suit every fall to get through all the charity events. See?” stepping back for a better view of the ruffled gray Giorgio Armani pantsuit she was wearing.

Playing a deliriously social wife in a Park Avenue penthouse in Paul Rudnick’s new play, “Regrets Only,” has left Christine Baranski somewhat inspired. “Around the holidays I don’t buy for myself. I don’t want people buying me things. And since I have a family, we are always trying to simplify holidays,” she said. “In ‘Regrets Only,’ I play a society maven who has all these beautiful clothes. There is a faux Chanel bag I use in the show and I did go into the Chanel boutique to look at one. It has brown quilted leather and a gold chain. I didn’t buy it. It’s kind of a dream for me that some day if I have enough cash flow, I will probably do that.”
Another actress currently on Broadway, Blythe Danner, who stars in “Last Summer,” is also a designer fan. “I love Max Mara. It’s great for young women and all types of women,” she said. “I’ll also probably buy something from Miss Herrera, and Marc Bouwer, who always designs such great things for me.”
Liz Lange’s personal gift guide was even more specific. “There are so many things I want. I have my eye on a little black Oscar de la Renta dress, a great pair of vintage earrings, maybe matching vintage cuff bracelets and a white woven hobo bag by Bottega Veneta,” she said. “I sound really materialistic. I’m not going to buy all those things, but they are on my wish list.”
