The New York runway season proved one of the strongest in recent years, with pockets of powerfully wrought creativity and showmanship that kept the interest level high throughout an overloaded, logistically complicated calendar. The season was bracketed by a pair of blockbusters — near the beginning, Riccardo Tisci’s soulful meditation for Givenchy on 9/11; at the end, Marc Jacobs’ riotous take on red, white and blue. In between the moods were many, often with elements of romanticism: Carolina Herrera’s exquisite gentility that extended to her venue, the Frick; Josep Font’s “Gypsy Ballads”–Emilie Flöge fusion at Delpozo; Nicola Formichetti’s odd and edgy gender-fluid prettiness at Nicopanda. It felt like fashion.
