HONG KONG — Hollywood Road has long been a Mecca for tourists in Hong Kong. Filled with antique shops and the kicking-off point for the bustling SoHo neighborhood (short for South of Hollywood), the street is continually evolving. Indeed, these days those in the know don’t so much ride the escalator past Hollywood Road to see what’s happening, they head west on Hollywood Road itself.
During the daylight, visitors can browse the antique shops and light joss sticks at the landmark Man Mo Temple. But keep walking and you’ll find where the truly hip hang out even after hours. The Press Room (108 Hollywood Road), now established as one of Hong Kong’s most popular eateries, is a sleek bistro with arguably the town’s best steak frites. Its sister location, Classified (108 Hollywood Road), opened just a year ago and has everyone talking — not just because it offers delicious food served family-style, but also because it is home to Hong Kong’s one and only temperature- and humidity-controlled cheese room.
Neighbor to both The Press Room and Classified, M1NT (108 Hollywood Road) is an ultracool members club that originated in London. For visual stimulation it features a shark-filled aquarium and no shortage of pretty people. Unsurprisingly, it’s a popular venue for fashion shows and celebrity spotting.Another place to find famous names — both in person and on the shelves — is Lok Man Rare Books (192A Hollywood Road), located all the way on the end of Hollywood Road, where art galleries give way to wet markets. Boasting a fine collection of first editions, signed copies and very rare titles, this little shop has become a gathering spot for bibliophiles and art appreciators alike. What’s more, its presence means Hollywood Road is now a complete treat — from one end of the street to the other.
