“There’s nothing sadder than an old hippie,” Hunter S. Thompson once said, but the crowd that gathered at the last annual Big Sur Fair in 1972 seemed as happy as could be. Clad in faded cotton, antique lace and caftans mixed with turquoise and silver jewelry, these veterans of the Age of Aquarius spent an entire day drinking, smoking, sniffing and swaying among the black oaks at the Monterey Fair Grounds. In fact, the only note of discord came when one concertgoer accidentally punctured another with his McGovern button during a group hug.
