NEW YORK — “What’s 25 years?” said David Yurman with a dose of sarcasm at the lavish anniversary party for his jewelry company on Wednesday night.
“I’m not a jeweler and that’s OK,” said Yurman, who considers himself an artist before a businessman. “Tonight is about being yourself, being with friends and enjoying the music. It’s been a great trip.”
Some 150 guests — including Burt Tansky of Neiman Marcus, Michael Gould of Bloomingdale’s, Fred Wilson and Ron Frasch of Saks Fifth Avenue, Art Reiner, Damon Dash and Rachel Roy and Marvin Traub — attended a cocktail party and dinner at The Frick Collection on Fifth Avenue here.
“It’s been a wonderful road,” said Sybil Yurman, wearing an enormous South Sea pearl necklace her husband David had given her for her birthday. “And [to think] we didn’t know how to make anything but beautiful sculpture.”
It’s been a big year for Sybil Yurman, president of the company, who last month was cited as a “captain of the industry” as she was bestowed with the Woman of Achievement Award by the San Antonio Museum of Art.
And ever the bohemian artist — as she has categorized herself on occasion — Sybil is always open-minded. “When I met Sybil, I was wearing this shirt with sequins all over,” said designer Kai Kuhne. “And Sybil saw me and said, ‘I just have to meet him.'” Yurman then supplied Kuhne’s spring runway show with over $200,000 worth of jewels.
Throughout the evening, guests mingled and congratulated the golden couple, who after dinner escorted everyone to the music room to dance to their two favorite bands: the Cal James Orchestra followed by the Campbell Brothers, who were flown in from Chicago.
