On Tuesday night, Japanese pearl-centric brand Mikimoto kicked off fashion week with a cocktail party to unveil its new high jewelry collection.
The event was held inside the Ascent Lounge, rebranded “Atelier M” for the evening, inside the Shops at Columbus Circle. Models wearing diamond and pearl pieces from the new collection were stationed throughout the room, illuminated by overhead spotlights.
Early in the evening, brand chief executive officer Kentaro Nishimura greeted Uma Thurman, who was wearing a Mikimoto pendant tassel necklace with 427 Akoya cultured pearls and a 12-carat tanzanite.
“ I love to see famous people wear our pearls, but really, pearls are for everybody, too,” said Nishimura, as Thurman later chatted with model Paloma Elsesser near the venue’s floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Columbus Circle. Other guests nearby were peering at displays of new pieces from the brand’s Les Pétales and The Bows high jewelry collections.

“Pearls are really getting in trend, and it’s just such a nice time to show our products,” added Nishimura. “The way we make our jewelry, we make sure that it catches the eye from all different directions and there’s a fluidity to the pieces. So all our jewelry is very delicately made to the contour of the body.”
Nikki Kynard DJ’d as guests including Laura Kim, Laura Jung and Tina Leung stopped by to check out the collection.
“Pearls are always going to pass the test of time,” said Leung, whose fashion week kicked off the night before with the Marc Jacobs show. “As I get older, I really appreciate things that last, the things you can pass down.”
Like many New Yorkers in the crowd, Leung also appreciated the city’s recent warmer temperatures as the fashion week schedule continues to heat up. “I’m excited most to see everyone again,” she added. “I’ve been such a hermit.”
