The New York City Ballet galas are famous, of course, for the performances by the dancers, but also for a blink-and-you-miss-it red carpet dash by Mick Jagger.
The musician’s girlfriend, retired ballerina Melanie Hamrick, is a frequent attendee, so therefore Jagger has become one as well. On Thursday evening, at the NYCB Spring Gala, Hamrick was an event chair, with Jagger taking on the role of honorary chair. The duo joined Diane Kruger, Norman Reedus, Emmy Rossum, Hari Nef, Fran Drescher, Ashley Graham, Michael Bloomberg and more for an evening of cocktails, performance and dinner.
Emmy Rossum was wearing a black and white sequined Julie de Libran slipdress for the occasion.

“I always like to feel comfortable and effortless. Even if it takes a little effort,” she said.
For Rossum, the ballet is a family affair: She brought her nearly 5-year-old daughter to the NYCB this year for the first time, and the two already have tickets to attend again in a few weeks.
“Ballet is something that I flirted with before I was about 10 years old and was never quite very good at it, so I became a singer and an actor. But it is I think one of the most demanding, incredible physical feats and they just make it look so incredibly effortless,” she said. “I love telling story through movement and I just can’t wait to see Tiler [Peck]’s new work tonight. I follow her on Instagram so I can’t wait.”
Rossum’s summer plans include heading to Rhode Island to make a movie and then traveling to Iceland and Hungary where her husband, Sam Esmail, is making a movie. Up next, she has “Furious” coming out, which she described as “a very twisty, exciting thriller. It’s a very different role for me. We shot it in the city and it’s really twisty and sexy and fun and I can’t wait for people to see it.”
Olivia Palermo was most looking forward to seeing friends at the gala and celebrating springtime in the city.
“Everything’s in full bloom. People are really happy,” she said.
Kruger, who styles herself, had selected an Erdem two-piece look for the evening.
“I was literally begging them. I love the last collection. I wear them a lot, but this felt particularly great,” she said of the ensemble.
A former dancer herself, Kruger said being in the audience at the ballet “takes me right back.”
“Obviously I never danced at this level, but the excitement and the hard work and you’ve worked so hard for so many months, this is the night,” she said. “I just remember that feeling and it’s so exciting to me. I hold my breath for them.”
