Gill Zhou, managing director of Condé Nast China for a little more than two years, stepped down Wednesday.
The news was revealed during a companywide internal meeting on Wednesday morning, sources familiar with the matter told WWD.
Zhou succeeded Li Li, managing director of Condé Nast China for two years, in September 2022. Li stepped into the role after Sophia Liao, the former chief executive officer of Condé Nast China, was let go after 20 years. An outspoken critic of the group’s content strategy, Liao later won a labor arbitration ruling against the publishing house.
CM Liu, head of Condé Nast Taiwan, will oversee mainland China operations while the company searches for a new managing director. According to Linkedin, Liu has been the managing director and publisher of Condé Nast Taiwan since 2013.

After becoming the head of Condé Nast China, Zhou began building her social media profile on Xiaohongshu, the popular social commerce platform. With more than 12,000 followers, Zhou often shared her glamorous fashion week outings.
Since Wednesday, Zhou’s profile description has changed from “Condé Nast China managing director” to “media personality.”
Condé Nast China’s leading titles include Vogue, GQ, Architectural Digest and Condé Nast Traveler. Since July, GQ China ceased publication due to the termination of a partnership with Zhizu, a title owned by China News Service. In China, foreign magazines are required to copublish with a state-owned entity to gain publishing rights in the market.
