Mobile shopping app Shopkick has brought on a new chief executive officer who plans to expand its user base and retail partners.
Bill Demas today officially joins Shopkick, which is an in-store shopping app that rewards shoppers with “kicks” after they do things from entering a store, scanning product bar codes and making purchases. Demas comes from ad-tech platform Turn, where he was ceo, and also spent time at Yahoo, where he served as senior vice president and general manager of the Yahoo Publisher Network Group.
According to Nielsen numbers shared by Shopkick, the app has 23 million active users each month, which, according to the app, is triple the amount of users since it was acquired by SK Planet Co. Ltd., which operates cross-channel Web and mobile platforms in South Korea, in 2014.
“Shopkick has done an excellent job of creating the leading consumer mobile shopping platform, and it’s this foundation that I hope to build and scale as ceo,” Demas said.

Retailers who work with Shopkick include American Eagle Outfitters, Macy’s Procter & Gamble, Revlon, Best Buy, Unilever and more. At a time when retailers are investing in online-to-offline commerce and “omnichannel” programs that make use of a shopper’s mobile device, Shopkick has added video and purchase reward features to the app, in addition to making more additions to its leadership team. It also has added a new content discovery platform. Demas plans to continue the growth of Shopkick across retail, brand and data businesses.
According to former interim ceo Mike Lunsford, who is on the board, the hiring of Demas comes after a six-month search. “Bill brings years of experience building high performance teams, developing to-to-market product strategies and growing company valuations from single- to triple-digit millions,” Lunsford said.
Initial investors included Kleiner Perkins’ Fund, Greylock Partners and Reid Hoffman.
