PARIS — Chanel has named Uniqlo executive Berndt Hauptkorn its new president in Europe. He is to start in the role in October and report to Maureen Chiquet, Chanel’s chief executive officer.
Hauptkorn succeeds Didier Sabas, who is retiring after almost 30 years of service, according to Chanel.
Hauptkorn has been chief executive officer of Uniqlo Europe since 2012, and he also carried the title of senior vice president and global officer for Uniqlo’s parent, Fast Retailing Co. Ltd., according to his LinkedIn profile.
A German national, Hauptkorn was ceo of Swiss luxury brand Bally from 2009 through 2011, and before that, he was ceo of Vienna-based holding company Labelux, which bought Bally in 2008.
Under Hauptkorn’s stewardship, Labelux’s portfolio grew to include Solange Azagury-Partridge, Derek Lam and Zagliani.
