With seemingly endless supply of skin care products on the market today, finding a healthy regimen isn’t easy. As skin care continues to gain momentum on social media, many consumers have become overwhelmed with complicated routines that are expensive, unnecessary and, ultimately, don’t address the user’s needs.
Post-pandemic, RoC commissioned research to understand consumers evolving experience with their skin, skin care products and regimen. Surprisingly, the company’s findings revealed that only 23 percent of consumers use a morning and evening skin care routine. Skin irritation has been discovered as a key reason for failing to develop a healthy regimen, with 61 percent of consumers expressing worry that products will damage or irritate their skin. RoC’s study also found that more than 50 percent of consumers believe they have sensitive skin, with the root of this skin concern being a damaged barrier.
Finding a simple, effective and affordable skin care routine is a challenge that RoC’s collective team of dermatologists say they see every day – one that the brand is taking head-on with its new Barrier Renew collection. Combined with RoC’s clinically proven history of products and insights from more than 65 years of medical dermatology collaboration, the collection provides consumers with a breakthrough approach to work deeper within the skin barrier.
While RoC’s existing innovations have helped treat fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration, dullness, dryness and more, the Barrier Renew collection is RoC’s first Ceramide-based line aimed at retraining and maintaining balanced, healthy skin – the first to target overall skin health for all skin types and concerns. It also works as a perfect partner when used alongside products in the brand’s other collections.
The Barrier Renew collection has launched with three foundational products including the gel-to-foam cleanser, the AM moisturizer SPF 30 and the PM moisturizer.
“We understand that sensitive skin isn’t always in your genes, but is a result of external damage, including environmental aggressors, overuse of harsh products and even use of the wrong ingredients,” said Fernando Acosta, chief executive officer of RoC Skin care. “It was important that we offered a solution to help repair and maintain optimal skin health, which, as noted by many dermatologists, starts with the skin barrier.”
Notably, a key finding in the company’s research, said Acosta, was that although skin is the body’s largest organ and consumers are conducting more research than ever, only half of consumers know what the skin barrier is.
“We wanted to help dermatologists find a simple skin care solution for their patients with self-perceived sensitive skin that can often be irritable and unpredictable,” said Acosta. “Consumers are not properly taking care of their skin and that’s often due to feeling confused and overwhelmed by the complexity and volume of skin care technologies. In fact, 68 percent of our survey respondents said they would prefer a simpler routine with 3 products or less.”
Known by consumers and dermatologists alike for proving every product’s efficacy in clinical studies, Acosta told Fairchild Studio it was important to continue to do so in the development of the Barrier Renew collection, which is now the brand’s most clinically tested product line it has ever launched. The clinical testing for each formula took place over two years, looking at every skin type, tone and texture, both individually and as a regimen.
“We wanted to offer a collection that could treat even the most damaged skin barrier without irritation, while still producing the remarkable, visible results that we experience across our portfolio of products,” said Acosta. “From this rigorous testing, we found that combining ceramides with other healthy skin building blocks like antioxidants and prebiotics proved to have impressive clinical results, ultimately producing something new to the market.”
Products within the Barrier Renew collection include the use of innovations combining ceramides, antioxidants to repair the skin barrier, barrier SPF protection and microbiome support with prebiotics and reduction of barrier sensitivities that cause redness and irritation with lipo peptides. Importantly, the products are also easy to use for all ages and skin types.
“Consumers are tired of the countless steps needed to achieve healthy skin,” said Acosta. “We wanted to uncomplicate the process by offering an affordable, all-in-one collection that truly fits the needs of every skin type and concern. No matter your skin concern, whether it be breakouts, redness, dryness, dullness, uneven texture and/or irritation, Barrier Renew is a simple solution for all.”
While some products just sit on top of skin, masking issues, Barrier Renew combines barrier-essential ingredients that work within the skin’s surface. In four weeks, it improves the sensitivity threshold of the skin to reduce the recurrence of redness, resulting in skin that looks and feels healthier. In testing, RoC’s Barrier Renew collection proved to help repair skin and reduce the appearance of redness in just 14 days.
“At RoC, we aim to provide simple communications that uncomplicate the skin health journey and point to solutions that are ultimately effective for long-term benefit,” said Acosta. “We’re proud of the Barrier Renew collection as it’s the most tested to date, providing a clinically proven AM / PM routine that allows anyone to achieve their optimal skin health.”
