Hairstylists Neil Moodie and Paul Windle want to pull the plug on ungainly hair tools. In May, the duo introduced WAM, designed to offer stylists appliances as sexy as the coifs they’re fashioning. “We wanted to create the Apple MAC of electrical hair tools,” says Windle, whose eponymous salon in London’s Covent Garden counts Reese Witherspoon, Erin O’Connor and Orlando Bloom among its clients. “We wanted to make a sexy hair dryer, a sexy straightening iron and a sexy curling iron.” “Nothing looked stylish, they were all quite functional,” adds Moodie. “We felt nobody made a full range in which everything performed really well.” And he should know. The stylist, whose work is seen below, is a fixture in the fashion set, having worked with Armani, Calvin Klein and Gucci, among others. WAM’s main attractions are quirky design elements incorporated into the products with backstage stylists and hairdressers in mind. The hair dryer, $260, for example, has a collapsible handle so it can be held by the barrel like a camcorder to offer an alternative position for tired arms. Curling irons, $237, meanwhile, reach maximum heat within seconds. Currently sold at wamhair.com and Selfridges, the appliances were designed with dual voltage capacity, so they could make their way to the U.S. in the future.
