“It’s a hair attack!” hairstylist Guido Palau said of the look he created for Redken backstage at Marc Jacobs Monday night. “It’s a bouffant, teased, I-don’t-know-what.”The film “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” inspired the look, according to Palau, who went all out with hot rollers, Redken Thickening lotion, clips, hair dryers and backcombing to create voluminous masses atop each model. “It’s Anne Bancroft, [Elizabeth] Taylor-esque. She’s a siren. It’s sexy but elegant, sophisticated.”
After setting the hair with rollers, Palau teased it, tucked long back sections up and under the bouffants and held it in place — with flyaways galore — using Redken Forceful spray.
In contrast, makeup artist Dick Page created an opaque finish for Shiseido at the Jacobs show. The idea was not to “erase the face,” he said, but to “flatten features,” creating an almost “blank” look, which was achieved with a combination of foundations. “It’s a very natural, blank face [in contrast to] gigantic hair,” said Page. “It’s very clean and clear.”
Just before models hit the catwalk, they were given a wet, beige lip. The lip concoction was a result of Page stirring together two shimmery Shiseido lipsticks with Vaseline. “It’s gooey, wet and very impermanent,” he said.
