Stepping onto the international stage under the artistic direction of Veronique Branquinho, Delvaux, the Belgian leather goods giant, presented its latest bag collection in the form of a fashion show. Likening the brand to the Belgian equivalent of France’s Hermès, Branquinho, who joined the 180-year-old house in 2009, said she felt it was time to introduce Delvaux into other markets. Barneys New York is said to have already placed an order for fall. “In Belgium, it’s such a big story; it’s the top of the luxury business,” said Branquinho. “When you graduate or get married, you get a Delvaux bag.”

The setting, a hotel particulier with gilded wood paneling and giant chandeliers, proved an apt venue for the house’s ladylike designs, which were presented on models dressed in black tights and mannish, belted tailored jackets and the house’s shawls. Branquinho began with four heritage Delvaux bags in boxy black styles, while covetable new additions included a retro duck-blue handbag with the house’s elongated D symbol, a fold-over clutch in cognac ostrich and a boxy, Seventies-style forest green leather and suede evening bag with a gold chain. Delvaux belts and bracelets were also in the mix.
