HONG KONG — Parisian luxury leather goods maker Moynat is pushing ahead with its global expansion strategy. It will cut the ribbon on boutiques in Taipei and Seoul by this fall bringing its total store count to 11 doors.
“We cannot make enough bags,” said Moynat chief executive officer Guillaume Davin, who was in Hong Kong last week to host a series of gatherings with VIP customers. “The Chinese are shopping everywhere.”
Although he declined to release numbers, Davin said sales have been strong across the region. The executive said Asian clients as a whole represent about 60 percent of the brand’s global business.
“They are very independent in their choices,” he said of mainland Chinese customers. “Moynat is very much about discreet elegance. It’s very understated, with not a logo in sight. Clearly there is a market for this.”
He did admit that the brand has had a harder time winning over Japanese clientele.

“The Japanese are a little more conservative…so it will take a little more time to establish the brand there,” he said of the 19th-century trunk maker that Bernard Arnault is reviving.
Moynat plans to unveil a 1,184-square-foot boutique in Taipei’s Bellavita mall in August. That same month it will also open two 700-square-foot stores at The Shilla Seoul hotel and the Shinsegae Department Store in Gangnam, an affluent neighborhood in the Korean capital. A Singapore boutique is also slated for next year.
“From the beginning, we have had an incredible following from Singaporeans and clients from Southeast Asia including Thailand, Indonesia and Philippines,” said Davin.
Asked what’s next, Davin divulged that Moynat has tapped Franco-Hungarian street artist Flavien Demarigny, aka Mambo, to create limited-edition bags to debut in Paris this fall. “We’ll combine very joyful, fun motifs from Mambo and mix it with very beautiful marquetry,” he said. Previous collaborators with the brand include contemporary artist Daniel Arsham and singer Pharrell Williams.
