The Mills Fabrica and London Craft Week have joined forces to highlight eight sustainable designers and makers at Selfridges in London.
From May 12-18, their co-curated shoppable edit will be showcased at the Reselfridges, the department store’s ground floor destination for pre-owned goods as well as resale, repair, rental, refill and recycling services. The joint curation showcases makers and innovators using creativity and innovation to repurpose, reuse and repair unwanted items and waste materials.
The Mills Fabrica, the London and Kong Kong-based sustainable incubator for techstyle and agrifood industries, chose four of the designers.
East London-based E.L.V. Denim was among the selection. Designer Anna Foster launched the denim brand in 2018 producing garments made from 100 percent upcycled denim. The label has expanded to shirting, tailoring and leather and recently presented during London Fashion Week. Selfridges sells the brand’s denim range.
The Mills Fabrica also chose MAIE, slow furniture brand that upcycles marble and plastic waste; Müll Club, a U.K. recycler that recently transformed Fortum & Mason’s packaging waste into trays and coasters; and the French design studio Maison Errance, which makes sculptures from eco-conscious materials such as Jesmonite and bioplastics.
London Craft Week selected Lulu Harrison, a glass artist and the winner of the LVMH Maison/0 Green Trial Award; James Shaw, a maker who uses recycled HDPE and polypropylene plastics to make sculptures; Ryan Barrett, a ceramic artist who uses virtual reality in his creation process; and Natalia Triantafylli, a Greek designer who makes one-off 3D printed collectable design pieces.
“We’re honored to be involved in bringing this selection of incredible designers to the iconic Selfridges store, in the pursuit of making sustainable products accessible to all and spotlighting the makers who are embedding reuse and recycling into their design and production processes,” said Amy Tsang, head of The Mills Fabrica UK.
This marks the fifth year that The Mills Fabrica has supported London Craft Week’s annual celebration of craftsmanship in the city. Launched in 2015, London Craft Week hosts workshops and events with independent makers, artists, brands, department stores, museums and galleries. Other events include leather demonstrations at Louis Vuitton’s Sloane Street store and “Sashiko: The Art of Japanese Repair Stitching,” an exhibition by Uniqlo and Studio Masachuka.
