Levi’s is expanding its use of BioBlack, Nature Coating’s carbon-negative black pigment replacement for petroleum-based carbon black.
The San Franscisco-based brand recently introduced new men’s styles made with the 100-percent bio-based and non-toxic dye. Styles include the 567 Relaxed Flare, 578 Baggy and Highlight Park Jacket.
Initially launching in the U.K. market, Nature Coatings said BioBlack is expected to be progressively introduced in the U.S. and other key global regions.
“By embracing BioBlack in its mainstream denim lines, Levi’s is demonstrating how fashion brands can prioritize sustainability without sacrificing style, quality, or performance,” said Ryan Cheng, Nature Coatings’ chief revenue officer.
Developed as a direct alternative to petroleum-based black dye, BioBlack’s chemistry contains a proprietary pigment derived from traceable industrial wood waste that comes from sustainably managed, certified sources. The pigment is produced through a closed-loop, circular manufacturing system.
Additionally, the technology recently achieved Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification, reinforcing its eco-friendly credentials and ensuring compliance with one of the highest sustainability benchmarks in textile manufacturing.
Levi’s introduced BioBlack in the Spring/Summer 2023 Levi’s WellThread Collection. The dye was used to print florals on organic cotton denim shorts and jackets.
Nature Coatings said the initial collection “effectively demonstrated BioBlack’s capabilities, laying a solid foundation for today’s broader adoption.”
That same year, Nature Coatings secured $2.45 million in funding to expedite the adoption of BioBlack by expanding manufacturing capabilities, strengthening the senior team, and establishing a global distribution network. The investment round was led by Regeneration.VC and The 22 Fund, with participation from actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio, Safer Made, and Portfolia.
“Levi’s early belief and implementation of BioBlack was pivotal in showcasing that sustainable solutions can perform at the highest industry standards,” said Jane Palmer, CEO of Nature Coatings. “This expansion to mainstream lines is a significant validation of our vision for a cleaner, more sustainable future in fashion.”
