SJ Denim turned 10 this year, and after a decade reporting on the business of denim, one thing is clear: trends might be constantly looking to the past, but innovations and sustainability attitudes are all about the future.
In this episode, Sourcing Journal executive editor and denim expert Angela Velasquez chats with Lauren Parker, director of Fairchild Studio, about the latest issue of SJ Denim and the industry at large. With the Kingpins denim show in Amsterdam fresh in her mind, Velasquez also offered forward-looking trend and business insights on the future of denim.
Looking back, she also reflected on how much denim has progressed over the past decade. “The biggest positive difference, and I don’t think denim mills and other suppliers give themselves much credit for this, is how sustainability is really carried throughout collections,” she said. “Ten years ago, sustainable products were just a small rack in a much larger booth filled with fabrics that were made without considering their environmental impact. Today, it’s the first or second box that needs to be ticked for a new product to see the light of day. I rarely see a mill talk about a collection that doesn’t have some responsible ingredient or purpose.”
