G-Star Teams Makes Couture Pieces With Beyoncé and Taylor Swift’s Glove Maker

G-Star continues to explore the elevated world of couture.

On Monday, the Dutch denim brand unveiled a capsule collection with Swedish couturière of gloves, Thomasine Barnekow.

Known for her jewelry-like gloves, Barnekow has designed gloves for Beyoncé, Rihanna, Taylor Swift and Margot Robbie while she was on the “Barbie” press tour. She has also produced gloves for fashion houses, including Balmain, Courrèges and Maison Margiela by John Galliano.

The G-Star x Thomasine collection features three one-of-one couture denim gloves—Second Hand, To Be Embraced and Hold Me Tight—all handmade in Barnekow’s Paris-based atelier.

Second Hand is made from three G-Star denim jackets, which were cut into two and sewn together to create one pair of gloves.

To Be Embraced combines raw denim and soft lambskin leather in a 13-foot braided piece. The design can be worn or installed as an art object. Hold Me Tight, the most sculptural design in the capsule collection, is constructed in a new knit material of finely cut denim and lambskin leather in several colors. The gloves are stitched with black elastic thread.

To Be Embraced

G-Star’s partnership with Barenkow also includes a ready-to-wear glove design called Amsterdam—a nod to G-Star’s hometown. Described as a “wearable translation” of the To Be Embraced couture style, the unisex gloves feature premium denim, lambskin leather and multiple zippers.

The Amsterdam is available in two sizes and retails for 499 euro (approximately $522). The gloves are available on G-Star’s website and at Barenkow boutique in Paris.

The partnership with Barnekow is a continuation of G-Star’s efforts to highlight wearable art. In June, G-Star teamed with The Nightmare Disorder (TND), an Amsterdam-based costume design studio founded by Benji Nijenhuis and Nemo Cheminée, to create make custom outfits for international drag icons Shea Couleé, Envy Peru and Hungry.

The brand previously linked with David Laport, a Dutch designer known for his circular couture approach to dressmaking, signature pleats and celebrity clientele including Rihanna, Sia and Solange. G-Star has also teamed with British milliner Stephen Jones for a collection of denim headwear consisting of five haute couture designs and two limited edition ready-to-wear hats.
