Victorian influences, a fresh take on gorpcore and a growing appreciation for slow craft are in the forecast.

The first edition of the 2027 Style Report from CottonWorks by Cotton Incorporated describes how these trends and more are shaping the future of cotton fashion. The report is designed to be actionable, not only showing the versatility of cotton fabrics, but also connect suppliers with designers.

Romantic Revival

Romantic Revival shows a softer side of fashion.

Through feminine elements like ties and voluminous sleeves, the theme brings romantic undertones to women’s cotton shirting fabrics like crisp cotton poplins, lightweight cotton plain weaves and puckered fabrics. Men’s styles combine masculine silhouettes with unexpected fabrics like eyelet and delicate accents like pearls and embroideries.

Open constructions mimic the look of lace in men’s and women’s knitwear and unisex staples like polos.

Capelet coats for women update the basic trench coat in cotton canvas and lightweight twills. The report notes how warp faced satins can enhance the garment’s drape. The cotton bomber jacket is a standout items in men’s outerwear. In OfficeCore, CottonWorks reimagines suiting with fashion forward silhouettes.

For women, cotton two-piece blazer and skirt sets are a feminine take on formal office dressing. Lapel-less blazers, curved sleeves and long Bermuda shorts offer a new look, while oversized fits nod to men’s wear. Basketweave fabrics with multi-tonal novelty yarns and cotton/linen/elastane blends add tactile interest.

Men’s cotton dress pants are updated with relaxed fits, cropped hems and oversized silhouettes.  The report notes how herringbone constructions with heathered effects, brushed surfaces, elasticated waist and pleating details, and cotton/wool blends will be key design details for men’s office attire.

Upstate Outdoors

Unisex styling plays a large role in Upstate Outdoors, a theme that calls for garments made with Storm Cotton Technology for water resistance, Fair Isle patterns, brushed and peached surfaces and structured knits.

The unisex camp pant emerges as a key item. The functional item gets a fashionable update with oversized pockets in contrasting fabric. The base can be made with canvas, basketweave, and twill constructions in earthy colorways or in classic camouflage.

The chore jacket is another standout that can be even more versatile with Storm Cotton Technology, Cotton Incorporated’s water repellant finish. Men’s and women’s utility jackets create the opportunity for designers to experiment with pocket and hardware placement. For women, CottonWorks notes how bold primary colors in full looks or as an accent and pastel shades push the workwear item further into fashion.

Buffalo checks, ginghams and colorful plaid fabrics emerge in unexpected silhouettes for dressier outdoor looks such as drapey tops, dresses and skirts for women. In men’s wear, the colors and prints add a fresh look to pieced bottoms outerwear. Corduroy and velour fabrics are especially important.

Prep Redux

Preppy fashion was a notable trend at Spring/Summer 2026 men’s fashion weeks. In Prep Redux, CottonWorks imagines how ’90s influences and bold stripes update the evergreen theme.

Off-kilter stripe directions, unusual color combinations and details like denim colors update polos and rugby shirts. Elements of grunge are found across retro knitwear silhouettes like sweater vests and cardigans. Ragged hemlines amplify the Kurt Cobain-inspired look.

Cotton/nylon blends, hooded silhouettes and quilted constructions give shackets a technical hand. The forecast also calls for more bottoms made with shirting weight fabrics like crisp cotton poplin and plain weaves. The fabrics are ideal for shorts, skirts and bottoms with double wasitbands.

Leisure Lifestyle

Pajama dressing is central theme in Leisure Lifestyle, a theme that elevates effortless basics.

Comfortable cotton basics in mixed fabrications, striped motifs and dainty accents for elevated the easy coordinates made with plain weaves and poplin. Meanwhile, lightweight leisure skirts are an office-appropriate alternative to pajama-style shorts.

Street Style at Milan Men’s Spring 2026 Fashion Week

Hoodies are also important, updated in a myriad of ways from uneven hemline, short sleeves and boxy fits to untraditional fabrics like cotton rich stretch poplins, oxfords and warp faced satins. Half zip closures and kangaroo pockets maintain the garment’s sporty vibe.

CottonWorks notes that the theme allows designers to get creative with hints of lingerie styling, bubble hems, colorful trim and curved and raw seams.

Artisanal Aesthetic

Homespun, handcrafted and bohemian are some for ways CottonWorks describes Artisanal Aesthetic. The theme relies on bold texture and color combinations give apparel heirloom qualities.

Subtle frays give garments an unfinished look, while embroidery, crochet and eyelet nod to slow fashion. Granny squares and geometric patterns update basic sweaters. Whipstitched and scalloped trims underscore the theme’s crafty inspiration.

Natural dyes give knits unique colors, including some with a denim look. The report notes how chalky and powdered looks give an aged appearance to cotton knits and wovens through different wash-down techniques and finishing effects.
